Art Education

A background in instructional Approaches
to teaching Art in Elementary School
Connected Learning

The Arts establish "Practical Habits of Thought*"

*Adapted from Charles Fowler's "Strong Arts, Strong Schools"
Much like a plant, the human mind needs to be nurtured by the elements of education necessary for the development of a deeply grounded foundation for academic growth, rooted in the arts.

Art explores & expresses Identity

At the core of art education are principles of expression which explore identity through space, place, history and values from a personal and communal perspective using words and imagery.

Art and Community

"Art Builds Community"
I believe that an effective art program has strong foundations and ties to the surrounding community.  Artists must be creative, reflective and active to be disciplined in their craft. In this respect, students endeavor to establish culture by participating in creating art to share with their communities.

Snapshots: Projects from the Past

Note About Featured Artwork

I have been teaching art for 11 of my 15 years in public education.  Before moving to Johnson Elementary, I taught Art and Integrated Science in Fraser, Colorado.   The gallery artwork featured in "Snapshots from the Past" was created by former students at Fraser Valley Elementary.  Students explored then, and continue to explore now, themes of: identity, environmental justice, social history, culture and community in their artwork
